Piedmont properties

What are the attractions of buying Piedmont property? This beautiful region (“Piemonte” in Italian) lies north of Tuscany but shares more than just a border with its famous neighbour. It too boasts charming old farmhouses, rolling hills covered with vineyards, spectacular peaks including the Matterhorn, Monte Rosa, Monviso and Argentera – and is one of Italy’s great wine-producing regions. In addition, it has more Michelin-starred restaurants than anywhere else in Italy.

In other words, this is a region with many of Tuscany’s assets but Piedmont properties come without the inflated prices that can make Tuscany one of priciest regions in which to buy property for sale in Italy.

Buying a property in Piedmont means you are right in the midst of some of Europe’s most magnificent landscapes. The name Piedmont means “foot of the mountain”. And bounded on three sides by the Alps, Piedmont is home to a range of spectacular peaks. Another attraction of Piedmont property is the fantastic skiing opportunities here. Piedmont has dozens of ski resorts such as Limone Piemonte, Sestriere, Sauze D’Oulx and Prato Nevoso.

Two more irresistible reasons drawing buyers to the property in Piedmont market are its stunning lakes – Maggiore, whose western coast falls within Piedmont, and the smaller Orta. Maggiore, with its famous resort of Stresa, is the more popular and some of the most stunning Piedmont properties are to be found here. Both lakes are within easy reach of ski resorts, meaning superb rental returns for if you own a villa, apartment or any other type of property in Piedmont’s lake district as they can be let to both summer and winter visitors.

Piedmont is also a land of rich, fertile hillsides that have given the region its great wine and culinary tradition. It is well known for its porcini mushrooms, chestnuts and white truffle. Asti produces excellent sparkling wines while Martini and Cinzano are made near the Piemontese capital Turin. Two other famous local inventions include breadsticks (grissini in Italian) in the late 1600s and Vermouth in the late 1700s.

Turin – incidentally the first capital of the united Italy in the 19th century – has a rich cultural history. Its Egyptian museum houses the most impressive array of Egyptian artefacts outside Cairo, many of the palaces of the old Savoy dynasty are here and its St John the Baptist Cathedral is home to the Turin Shroud.

Turin may once have been dismissed as the drab grey industrial home of car giant Fiat and soccer club Juventus. But it long ago reinvented itself as a thriving attractive city, ideal for city breaks, and in 2006 it hosted the Winter Olympics.
