When people think of Italy, Tuscany – with its farmhouses set in green rolling hills dotted with olive groves, vineyards, cypress trees and orchards – is the picture-postcard image that most readily springs to mind. Add the allure of world-famous cities such as Florence, Pisa, Lucca and Siena and it is easy to see why Tuscany attracts one in three of all visitors to Italy.

It certainly has no shortage of top-end luxury properties. But there is also lots of cheap property in Tuscany to be found, especially in areas such as Lunigiana, which lies in northern Tuscany and borders Liguria. Here, property prices can start from as little as €35,000 for a house needing restoration. There is also the bonus of being less than half an hour from the beautiful Cinque Terre coast, a Unesco World Heritage Site. In addition, the ski slopes of Zum Zeri are under an hour away.

Another highly affordable region for homes in Tuscany is Garfagana, which lies between Lunigiana to the north and the Pisa-Lucca-Florence belt to the south. Full of hills and mountains, it is one of the most scenic parts of Tuscany, which is otherwise fairly flat. Cheap property in Tuscany can also be found in the region’s southern reaches, in particular the highly affordable Maremma, which has picturesque towns such as Sorvana and Pitigliano. This part of Tuscany has great opportunities for outdoor pastimes such as horse-riding, trekking and hiking and skiing.

It’s a lovely prospect, the idea owning a dream property in Tuscany in the most popular part of the world’s most romantic country, in particular if you’ve snapped it up at a bargain. Tuscany…what’s not to like?
